  • Β·Optional: garden fabric or cardboard for the path underneath
  • Β·Optional: twine for extra vine training

Steps

  1. 1Measure your path width. A 16 ft panel forms an arch about 6.5 ft high over a 4–5 ft wide path.
  2. 2Drive two T-posts into the ground on each side, about 4 ft apart, leaving 12–18 inches above ground.
  3. 3Stand the cattle panel on edge and bend it into an arch. The spring steel will want to spring back β€” work slowly with a helper.
  4. 4Slide each end of the panel 12–18 inches into the ground between the two posts on that side.
  5. 5Zip-tie or staple the panel to the posts at top and bottom of each end.
  6. 6Plant climbing crops on both sides at the base of the arch.
  7. 7Train the first few vines onto the panel horizontally; after that they climb themselves.

Tools needed

  • Β·T-post driver or sledgehammer
  • Β·Pliers or fence staple hammer
  • Β·Tape measure
  • Β·Work gloves
  • Β·Optional: post-hole digger if soil is rocky

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Β·Not burying the panel ends deep enough β€” a heavy crop can tip it
  • Β·Using flimsy T-posts that bend under load
  • Β·Planting shade-lovers directly underneath
  • Β·Letting vines overgrow one side and unbalance the arch

Maintenance tips

Inspect T-posts each spring and pack soil around any loosened holes. Store panels flat if you ever disassemble them.
