Steps

  1. 1Clear and level the bed area.
  2. 2Lay cardboard or fabric over the soil to suppress weeds.
  3. 3Arrange blocks in a 4×8 rectangle, two blocks wide on the ends.
  4. 4Check that corners are square and the top course is level.
  5. 5Stack a second course if you want more height, staggering joints.
  6. 6Fill the bed with a mix of topsoil, compost, and aged manure.
  7. 7Plant herbs like thyme or oregano in the block holes, or cap them.
  8. 8Water thoroughly to settle the soil before planting.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ·Using old blocks that may leach — choose new concrete blocks, not fly-ash cinder blocks
  • ·No cardboard or fabric under the bed — weeds come up through the holes
  • ·Filling every hole with soil — use holes for herbs or cover with caps
  • ·Building too tall without mortar — over 2 courses needs adhesive

Maintenance tips

Brush off algae or moss yearly. Replace any cracked blocks. Cap the top holes if you don't want plants in them.
