  • Β·Optional: wood stain or sealant

Steps

  1. 1Mark a grid of horizontal lines 12–18 inches apart on the wall or posts.
  2. 2Install eye bolts or vine eyes at each grid point.
  3. 3Run wire through the eyes and tension with turnbuckles.
  4. 4Plant a young fruit tree 8–12 inches from the base of the frame.
  5. 5Select 2–3 strong branches and tie them gently to the lowest wires.
  6. 6Prune off branches that grow forward or backward from the plane.
  7. 7Add new tiers each season as the tree grows.
  8. 8Loosen and retie straps as the trunk thickens.

Tools needed

  • Β·Cordless drill / driver
  • Β·Tape measure and level
  • Β·Wire cutters
  • Β·Wrench for turnbuckles

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Β·Using flimsy wire that sags under fruit weight
  • Β·Placing the frame flush against the wall β€” no airflow
  • Β·Training a tree with the wrong growth habit
  • Β·Forgetting to loosen ties as the trunk thickens

Maintenance tips

Prune 2–3 times a year to maintain the flat shape. Check ties each spring and replace any that are cutting in.
