Steps

  1. 1Dig four post holes 2 ft deep and 10 inches wide.
  2. 2Set the posts in the holes, brace them plumb, and pour concrete around each.
  3. 3Let concrete cure at least 24 hours.
  4. 4Bolt the top beam across the front and back posts.
  5. 5Build two side lattice panels and attach them between the posts.
  6. 6Install the bench seat and back slats between the front posts.
  7. 7Sand edges and apply exterior stain or sealant.
  8. 8Plant climbing vines at the base and guide them onto the lattice.

Tools needed

  • Β·Circular or miter saw
  • Β·Cordless drill / driver
  • Β·Shovel or post-hole digger
  • Β·Tape measure and level
  • Β·Socket wrench set

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Β·Notching the top beam too deep β€” weakens the arch
  • Β·Skipping concrete footings β€” it rocks in the wind
  • Β·Wood touching soil directly β€” rots the posts in 2–3 years
  • Β·Spacing the slats too far apart β€” small vines cannot climb

Maintenance tips

Seal or stain every 2–3 years. Tighten bolts each spring. Prune vines before they overtake the structure.
