Leaf Mold Bin

A simple wire bin that holds fallen leaves for 1–2 years while fungi break them down into rich, crumbly leaf mold.

Estimated cost

$15 – $35

Estimated time

30 – 60 minutes

Lifespan

10+ years

Soil needed

None — makes soil amendment from leaves

Weight empty

10–15 lbs

Weight full

200–400 lbs when packed

Best for

Turning fall leaves into a fluffy, moisture-retaining mulch and soil conditioner

Placement

Shady corner is fine — leaf mold breaks down without heat. Keep it accessible from the lawn.

  • ·Fallen leaves — lots of them
  • ·Optional: tarp to cover in heavy rain

Steps

  1. 1Choose a shady, out-of-the-way corner.
  2. 2Cut a 12-foot length of chicken wire to make a 4-foot diameter circle.
  3. 3Overlap the ends and tie them together with wire or zip ties.
  4. 4Drive stakes around the inside of the circle to keep it upright.
  5. 5Rake leaves into the bin as they fall.
  6. 6Water the pile if it gets bone dry.
  7. 7Turn the pile once or twice a year.
  8. 8After 1–2 years, the leaves will be dark and crumbly — ready to use.

Tools needed

  • ·Wire cutters
  • ·Hammer or post driver
  • ·Work gloves

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ·Mixing in grass clippings — that makes compost, not leaf mold
  • ·Packing leaves too tight — they need airflow
  • ·Letting the pile dry out completely — it stops breaking down
  • ·Using only oak or magnolia leaves — mix leaf types for faster results

Maintenance tips

Turn the pile once in spring and once in fall. Keep it as moist as a wrung-out sponge. Use finished leaf mold as mulch or mix into beds.
