Steps

  1. 1Cut the 6-inch pipe to 5–6 ft tall.
  2. 2Cut planting pockets every 8–10 inches in a spiral around the pipe. Make each pocket about 4 inches wide and 6 inches tall.
  3. 3Cover the bottom hole with landscape fabric and set the tower on a paver.
  4. 4Insert the 4-inch irrigation pipe down the center, leaving the top exposed for watering.
  5. 5Fill the tower with moist potting mix, firming it around each pocket as you go.
  6. 6Plant one strawberry or lettuce start in each pocket.
  7. 7Water slowly through the center pipe until water drips from the bottom.
  8. 8Rotate the tower a quarter turn each week for even light.
  9. 9Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season.

Tools needed

  • Β·Hole saw or jigsaw (for cutting pockets)
  • Β·Utility knife
  • Β·Tape measure
  • Β·Marker

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Β·Using too-small pockets that dry out instantly
  • Β·No irrigation tube β€” the top dries while the bottom stays soggy
  • Β·Towers too narrow and top-heavy
  • Β·Planting heat-sensitive crops on the sunny south side without shade

Maintenance tips

Water slowly from the top daily in summer. Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Trim runners so energy goes to fruit.
