Good to know

Poisonous — do not eat

Parts of this plant are poisonous to people and pets. Don't eat it, keep it out of reach of children and animals, and wash up after pruning.

When & where

Season
Hardy annuals and perennials in early spring or fall; tender annuals after the last frost.
USDA zones
Perennial hardiness varies with the species — check its range against your USDA zone; annuals grow anywhere in summer.
Sun
Full sun to part shade
Start indoors
6–8 weeks before last frost.
Direct sow outdoors
After the last frost, or in fall for species that need winter chilling.
Days to harvest
60–90 days to first bloom for annuals; perennials usually bloom in their second year.

Germination

Germination time
7–28 days.
Soil temperature
65–75°F (18–24°C)

Spacing & depth

Sow depth
1/8–1/4 in (3–6 mm). Some species need light to germinate — press those onto the surface instead of covering.
Seed spacing
1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) in flats, thinned to the strongest seedling.
Mature plant spacing
9–18 in (23–45 cm) for most annuals and perennials; tall or clumping perennials 24–36 in (60–90 cm).
Row spacing
12–24 in (30–60 cm) in a cutting bed.

How to plant

Sow into a fine seed mix, cover only as deep as the seed requires, and keep evenly moist until germination. Harden off before planting out, then pinch young plants once to encourage branching.

Grower's tip

Cyclamen coum — Eastern Sowbread, Persian Violet.

Soil preferences

Soil type

Well-drained garden soil. Native/wildflower species prefer lean soil; cutting flowers prefer richer beds.

pH range

6.0–7.0

Amendments

Work 1 in of compost into beds before sowing. Skip nitrogen fertilizer on wildflowers — it favors foliage over blooms.

Watering

Frequency

1 in per week during establishment, drought-tolerant once rooted for most species.

Method

Deep, infrequent soakings at the base. Overhead water on ornamentals promotes botrytis and rust.

Over vs. under

Overwatered: rotted crowns, mildew, floppy stems. Underwatered: small blooms, curled leaves, quick fade.

Top-water or bottom-water?

Prefers bottom-watering — The tuber sits at the soil line and rots if it stays wet. Set the pot in shallow water 15 min, then drain — never pour on the crown.

Temperature tolerance

Ideal daytime air temp

60–80°F (16–27°C) ideal for most annuals

Ideal nighttime air temp

50–65°F (10–18°C)

Frost sensitivity

Cool-season annuals (larkspur, poppy, snapdragon) tolerate light frost; warm-season annuals (zinnia, cosmos, marigold) are frost-tender.

Container growing

Container-suitable?

Possible with the right cultivar

Recommended pot size

8–14 in (20–35 cm) wide

Notes

Compact and dwarf types do best in pots; tall cutting flowers need staking.

Detailed harvesting

Nothing here is harvested for the kitchen. Wear gloves for any cutting or deadheading, keep the sap off your skin and eyes, and wash your hands and tools afterwards.

Post-harvest storage & preservation

Do not dry, store or preserve any part of this plant near food. Bag prunings for the bin — never compost them where animals browse, and never burn them.

Culinary, medicinal & other uses

Ornamental only — this plant is poisonous and has no food, tea or home-remedy use. Grow it for looks, wear gloves, and keep it away from children, pets and livestock.

Medicinal or traditional uses are shared for interest only — this is not medical advice. Consult a qualified professional before using any plant medicinally.

Seed saving

Pollination

Mostly insect-pollinated (outcrossing).

Isolation needs

For pure strains, isolate 150–800 ft or bag heads. Wildflower mixes are meant to cross freely.

How to save

Stop deadheading favorite blooms; let heads dry brown and rattling on the stem, then collect into a paper bag.
