Good to know

Severely poisonous

This plant is severely poisonous if any part of it is eaten. Keep it away from children, pets and livestock, wash your hands after handling it, and never use it in teas, food or home remedies.

When & where

Season
Cool-season herbs in early spring and fall; tender herbs after the last frost.
USDA zones
Annual herbs grow in any zone in summer; perennial herbs are usually hardy in zones 5–9.
Sun
Full sun to part shade
Start indoors
6–8 weeks before last frost.
Direct sow outdoors
After the last frost once soil reaches 60°F (16°C).
Days to harvest
30–60 days to first cutting.

Germination

Germination time
7–21 days.
Soil temperature
65–75°F (18–24°C)

Spacing & depth

Sow depth
1/8–1/4 in (3–6 mm); tiny seed such as thyme or marjoram is pressed onto the surface and left uncovered.
Seed spacing
1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) apart, thinned after germination.
Mature plant spacing
8–18 in (20–45 cm) apart depending on the herb — basil and parsley 10–12 in, sage and rosemary 24–36 in.
Row spacing
12–18 in (30–45 cm).

How to plant

Sow shallowly in a light mix, keep evenly moist and give the strongest light you have. Pinch the growing tip early to build a bushy plant and keep cutting so it never sets seed.

Grower's tip

Datura inoxia — Angel's Trumpet, Downy Thorn Apple, Indian Apple, Moonflower, Pricklyburr.

Soil preferences

Soil type

Light, well-drained loam. Most culinary herbs suffer in soggy soil.

pH range

6.0–7.5 (neutral)

Amendments

A single fork of finished compost at planting is plenty — over-feeding weakens flavor.

Watering

Frequency

Consistent moisture while young; let the top inch dry between waterings once established.

Method

Water at the base in the morning to keep leaves dry and prevent mildew.

Over vs. under

Overwatered: yellow lower leaves, damp-smelling soil, wilt that doesn't rebound. Underwatered: crispy tips, purple stems, sudden bolting.

Top-water or bottom-water?

Prefers top-watering — Trees are always top-watered — deep slow soak at the drip line, never at the trunk. Bottom-watering only makes sense for nursery seedlings.

Temperature tolerance

Ideal daytime air temp

65–85°F (18–29°C) ideal

Ideal nighttime air temp

55–65°F (13–18°C)

Frost sensitivity

Most annual herbs are frost-tender; perennial herbs (sage, thyme, oregano, mint) tolerate frost once established.

Container growing

Container-suitable?

Yes — great in containers

Recommended pot size

6–10 in (15–25 cm) wide, minimum 6 in deep

Notes

Herbs thrive in pots — group by water needs (Mediterranean herbs on the drier side, basil/parsley/cilantro on the wetter).

Detailed harvesting

Nothing here is harvested for the kitchen. Wear gloves for any cutting or deadheading, keep the sap off your skin and eyes, and wash your hands and tools afterwards.

Post-harvest storage & preservation

Do not dry, store or preserve any part of this plant near food. Bag prunings for the bin — never compost them where animals browse, and never burn them.

Culinary, medicinal & other uses

Ornamental only — this plant is poisonous and has no food, tea or home-remedy use. Grow it for looks, wear gloves, and keep it away from children, pets and livestock.

Medicinal or traditional uses are shared for interest only — this is not medical advice. Consult a qualified professional before using any plant medicinally.

Seed saving

Pollination

Mostly insect-pollinated; some (basil, mint) self-pollinate.

Isolation needs

Isolate different varieties of the same species by 150 ft or cage/bag flower heads to keep strains true.

How to save

Let one plant flower fully; harvest brown, dry seed heads into a paper bag; rub free and store dry.
