Cogongrass

Grass
Warm-season grasses sow in late spring; cool-season grasses in early fall or early spring.
Full sun to part shade

Also known as: Imperata cylindrica

Warning

Noxious weed — illegal to plant in many states

This is a listed noxious weed in the United States. Planting, moving or selling it is illegal in many states, and it takes over pastures and wild land fast. Don't plant it — if you already have it, report it to your county extension office and follow their removal advice.

When & where

Season
Warm-season grasses sow in late spring; cool-season grasses in early fall or early spring.
USDA zones
Check the species' hardiness range — and check whether it is listed as invasive where you live before sowing.
Sun
Full sun to part shade
Start indoors
Start plugs in trays 6–8 weeks before planting out.
Direct sow outdoors
Broadcast onto a firmed, weed-free seedbed and rake in lightly.
Days to harvest
Full clump size in 2–3 seasons.

Germination

Germination time
10–28 days.
Soil temperature
65–75°F (18–24°C)

Spacing & depth

Sow depth
Surface-sow to 1/4 in (6 mm) and press into firm contact — most grass seed needs light and shallow cover.
Seed spacing
Broadcast at the species' seeding rate; plugs 12–18 in (30–45 cm) apart.
Mature plant spacing
Ornamental clumps 18–36 in (45–90 cm) apart; turf and meadow species broadcast, not spaced.
Row spacing
N/A for broadcast sowing; 18–24 in (45–60 cm) between plug rows.

How to plant

Firm the seedbed, broadcast evenly, rake in shallowly and keep the surface damp until the seedlings are established. Cut back ornamental grasses to a few inches in late winter, before new growth starts.

Grower's tip

Listed noxious weed — do not plant it. This page is for identification and removal only. Imperata cylindrica — Cogongrass.

Soil preferences

Soil type

Almost any free-draining soil; most ornamental and prairie grasses prefer it lean.

pH range

5.5–7.5

Amendments

None needed. Rich soil makes clumps flop.

Watering

Frequency

Water through establishment, then only in extended drought.

Method

Soak the root zone; overhead is fine on grasses.

Over vs. under

Overwatered: floppy, splayed clumps. Underwatered: browning tips, early dormancy.

Top-water or bottom-water?

Prefers top-watering — Top-water (overhead sprinkler or rain) is the norm — grains are wind-pollinated and tolerate wet foliage well. Rice grows in standing water. Bottom-watering isn't practical for broadcast grain patches.

Temperature tolerance

Ideal daytime air temp

Broad — warm-season grasses want 75–95°F, cool-season 60–75°F

Ideal nighttime air temp

Down to the species' rated zone minimum

Frost sensitivity

Most perennial grasses go dormant with frost and return from the crown.

Container growing

Container-suitable?

Possible with the right cultivar

Recommended pot size

5–15 gal (19–57 L) for ornamental clumps

Notes

Clumping types behave in pots; running types will escape any bed you give them.

Detailed harvesting

Cut ornamental clumps back to 4–6 in (10–15 cm) in late winter, before new shoots emerge. Leave the winter structure standing until then.

Post-harvest storage & preservation

Dry seed heads upside down in a paper bag for arrangements or re-sowing.

Culinary, medicinal & other uses

Movement and winter structure, erosion control, meadow and prairie planting, wildlife cover.

Medicinal or traditional uses are shared for interest only — this is not medical advice. Consult a qualified professional before using any plant medicinally.

Seed saving

Pollination

Wind-pollinated — expect crossing between nearby species.

Isolation needs

Not practical outdoors.

How to save

Strip ripe seed heads into a bag once they shatter easily, then dry and clean.
