What's special about Miss Jekyll

The iconic sky-blue single-flowered heirloom on 18 in stems. Named for garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.

Growing this variety

Miss Jekyll follows the same growing basics as Love-in-a-Mist. Variety-specific maturity above; everything else below applies to the whole Love-in-a-Mist family.

Season
Cool season annual
USDA zones
Annual in zones 2–11
Sun
Full sun
Start indoors
Not recommended — hates transplant
Direct sow outdoors
2–4 weeks before last frost; succession-sow every 3 weeks
Days to harvest
70 days

Germination

Germination time
10–14 days
Soil temperature
60–70°F (15–21°C)

Spacing & depth

Sow depth
1/8" (3 mm) — needs darkness
Seed spacing
Broadcast; thin to 6–9 in
Mature plant spacing
6–9 in (15–23 cm)
Row spacing
12 in (30 cm)

How to plant

Direct-sow into cool soil and rake in lightly. Nigella resents transplanting. Short bloom window per plant — succession-sow every 3 weeks for a long season. Leave a few plants to form the striped inflated seed pods.

Grower's tip

The airy fennel-like foliage cradles blue, white, or pink blooms — then dramatic balloon seed pods that are prized dried. Reseeds vigorously.

Woody plant facts

USDA zones
Annual in zones 2–11
Mature height
6–12 ft (1.8–3.7 m)
Mature spread
5–10 ft (1.5–3 m)
Pollination
Insect-pollinated; most set fruit alone, but a second plant improves the crop.
Planting depth for seed
1/4–1/2 in (6–12 mm); large hard seed 1 in (2.5 cm).
Soil pH
6.0–7.0
Disease & problem notes
Thin the centre every winter for airflow — most shrub problems here are powdery mildew and leaf spot.

Soil preferences

Soil type

Free-draining garden soil. Most shrubs fail from wet feet, not poor fertility.

pH range

5.5–7.0 for most; acid-lovers (rhododendron, blueberry) want 4.5–5.5.

Amendments

Mulch a wide ring with compost or bark each spring; keep mulch off the stems.

Watering

Frequency

Deep soak weekly for the first two seasons, then only in drought.

Method

Slow soak over the root zone, not the crown.

Over vs. under

Overwatered: yellowing leaves, dieback, sour soil. Underwatered: leaf scorch, early leaf drop, sparse bloom.

Top-water or bottom-water?

Prefers top-watering — Top-water only — deep slow soak at the drip line, never at the trunk. Bottom-watering is only for tree seedlings in nursery pots (shallow tray 15 min). Established trees always get watered from above onto the soil.

Temperature tolerance

Ideal daytime air temp

Broad — hardy shrubs handle 35–90°F once established

Ideal nighttime air temp

Down to the species' rated zone minimum

Frost sensitivity

Hardy once established; first-winter seedlings need a mulch collar or cold frame.

Special germination requirements

Most temperate tree seed needs cold stratification (30–120+ days at 34–41°F) — see each species entry for the exact time.

Container growing

Container-suitable?

Possible with the right cultivar

Recommended pot size

10–20 gal (38–76 L) for a long-term potted shrub

Notes

Dwarf and compact forms do fine in large pots; full-size shrubs eventually need the ground.

Detailed harvesting

Prune rather than harvest — take out dead, damaged and crossing stems, and cut spring bloomers right after flowering so you don't remove next year's buds.

Post-harvest storage & preservation

Not applicable — this is a permanent planting.

Culinary, medicinal & other uses

Structure, hedging, screening, wildlife cover and season-long flower or berry interest.

Medicinal or traditional uses are shared for interest only — this is not medical advice. Consult a qualified professional before using any plant medicinally.

Seed saving

Pollination

Mostly insect-pollinated; seedlings vary from the parent.

Isolation needs

Not practical. Named cultivars must be grown from cuttings, not seed.

How to save

Collect ripe seed or clean berries in fall, then cold-stratify before spring sowing.
